Every afternoon during Ramadan, Kuala Lumpur's streets fill with hundreds of food stalls cooking for the evening's breaking of the fast. Visitors are welcome — and it is, quietly, the best eating of the Malaysian year.
What to eat
Bubur lambuk (the communal spiced porridge, often given free), ayam percik dripping off the grill, murtabak folded to order, roti john, air katira to drink, and kuih in colours you didn't know food came in. Arrive 5pm, buy everything, eat at sunset like everyone else.
The plan (this is where people fail)
Kampung Baru hosts the most famous bazaar — traditional Malay neighbourhood, hundreds of stalls, go at least once. TTDI and Bangsar bazaars are strong and less crowded. Etiquette is simple: buy freely all afternoon, but wait for maghrib (sunset) to eat alongside those fasting. Hotel iftar buffets are their own tradition and worth one splurge night.
Festival dates mean festival demand — the good tables and rooms go to whoever booked first.

Can non-Muslim visitors go to Ramadan bazaars?
Absolutely — bazaars are commercial street markets and everyone is welcome. The one courtesy: hold your first bite until sunset when those fasting break theirs.
When are the 2027 bazaars?
Ramadan 2027 is expected to run from 8 February to 9 March 2027, with Hari Raya Aidilfitri on 10-11 March. Islamic dates follow the moon: Malaysia combines astronomical calculation with official sighting at 29 stations, and the final date is declared by the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal a day or two beforehand, so it can shift by one day. Bazaars run daily from mid-afternoon to sunset.
Which bazaar should I visit first?
Kampung Baru — the historic Malay quarter's bazaar is the city's most famous, minutes from KLCC. Then try a neighbourhood one like TTDI for calmer browsing.
